Recording Scores
Please open the scoring link found in your email. You can record scores either during or after your presentation.
- Option 1- During the Presentation: Keep your scoring spreadsheet open. When the presentation reaches your first wine, pause, and start entering scores into cell G4. After entering your first score, press Enter to move vertically down to the next taster.
To switch between non-judges and judges, use the “Jump- Judge Scoring” or “Jump- Non-Judge Scoring” links.
After the Presentation

After your event, select a wine evaluation sheet and enter that tasters scores into the spreadsheet starting at cell G4. Use the Tab key to move horizontally across different wines for the same taster. After entering scores for that taster, hit the Enter key to move to the next row which is the next taster.
Viewing Statistics
Once scoring is complete, click “Jump-Statistics” to compare your chapter’s results with national data.
- Technical Tip: If you see a #REF! error when first opening the page, simply click “Allow Access” to sync the external data.
- Use the checkboxes in the top row to toggle results for specific wines on or off.
2. Generate Your Presentation and Scoring Spreadsheet
Please use your gmail account (or an account associated with Google) to open [Chapter Creation Form] that will generate your custom presentation and scoring document.
3. Submitting Scores
Submitting scores is explained in the video. There are two ways to handle scoring during your event:
-
During your event (Recommended): Submit scores during the presentation. This allows members to compare their notes with the group and the professional wine judges in real-time. It also auto-calculates chapter highs, lows, averages, and medal awards on the fly.
-
After your Event: You may also submit scores after the presentation if you prefer to review chapter averages at a later date.
[!IMPORTANT]
Manual Data Entry Only: Do not cut and paste score data from other spreadsheets. To avoid breaking the database links, only use the specific spreadsheet sent to your email.
Participation in the National Tasting Project (NTP) is always welcome, even if you choose not to submit scores.
4. Viewing Results
The video explains how to view results in detail. To view your chapter’s performance and how you stack up nationally:

📝 Important Scoring Guidelines
-
Valid Score Range: All scores must fall between 10.0 and 20.0.
-
Faulted Wines: If a wine is faulted, it will naturally score below 10.0. Please omit these scores entirely from your spreadsheet.
-
Backup Records: We strongly recommend retaining your physical Wine Evaluation sheets (hard copies) as a backup for your records.
🏅 Understanding NTP Medal Calculations
The National Tasting Project has transitioned to a Frequency-based statistical method for awarding medals. This approach is more accurate than traditional averages because it prevents “outlier” scores (extremely high or low) from skewing the results.
How Frequency Works:
We categorize every score into one of four ranges (Gold, Silver, Bronze, or No Medal). The medal with the highest number of scores (the most frequent) is the one awarded.
Example Case:
If a wine receives the following 9 scores:
-
Gold: 2 scores
-
Silver: 4 scores
-
Bronze: 2 scores
-
No Medal: 1 score
Result: The wine is awarded a Silver Medal because that range had the most entries.
Note: In the event of a tie between two ranges, the higher medal is awarded.
📊 Calculating Chapter Averages
To stay consistent with the frequency method, the “Chapter Average” is now calculated only using the scores within the winning medal range.
Using the example above:
If the 4 scores in the winning Silver range were 15, 16, 16, 15, the reported average would be 15.5.
Official Scoring Ranges:
| Award | Score Range |
| Gold | 17.0 – 20.0 |
| Silver | 15.0 – 16.99 |
| Bronze | 13.0 – 14.99 |
| No Medal | Below 13.0 |
