Semillon and Riesling Pairings

Sémillon Food Pairings

Sémillon is a versatile white grape that can display a wide range of styles from bone dry to lusciously sweet. Australian Semillon wines are full flavored white wines, mostly pale straw in color with aromatic expression of sweet citrus and orange blossom with classic varietal herbaceous notes. Light to medium bodied, the finish is usually clean and fresh with lingering lemon/ lime, straw and grassy flavors with zesty steel acidity.

Young Sémillon and shellfish, such as oysters, is a classic pairing. Sémillon will match a variety of seafood.  It will also complement the light spice and citrus of many Asian dishes. For those who love vegetarian food, Sémillon goes well with all types of salads, especially those with dried fruits and nuts. Sémillon pairs excellently with chicken and pork.  You will find vegetables, chicken and sausage in the Fricassee recipe!

Cheese Board Pairings:
It will come as no surprise to learn that Sémillon pairs beautifully with many types of cheese. Feta or any goat’s cheese is a delicious pairing and the rich flavors complement each other perfectly. Compté, Gruyere, and Cheddar will also work nicely when paired with Australian Sémillon in particular.

Riesling Food Pairings

The diversity of Riesling styles means you can find the right kind to match your meal. Australian Riesling wine is light, fresh and citrusy. It’s usually acidic and dry, not sweet.  The refreshing flavors of a young Australian Riesling will make a perfect pairing with anything you would serve with a squeeze of citrus; seafood is a classic example. Riesling from Clare Valley is known for crisp acidity and lower alcohol and is a great match for spicy foods and Asian dishes – try them with a creamy curry or an Asian stir-fry.     Source: www.winecompanion.com/aus
